There are 117 mined areas in the Falkland Islands (left from the 1982 Conflict) which cover an area of approximately 20 sq km. Most of the minefields are near Stanley and some of the larger camp settlements and are very clearly fenced and marked. It is thought that approximately 25,000 to 30,000 mines were laid and to date an estimated 6,000 of these have been destroyed.
